What about a hike on Austria's most southern alp, the Remschnigg Alm? But especially in the warm season, lush forests and cool rivers are an attractive hiking option: A hike through the Heiligengeist Gorge comes just right! And also, if you're looking for a culinary hike, Southern Styria is where to be.
All around, gentle hilly landscapes, idyllic vineyards and the townscape-defining Buschenschanken and wineries invite you to enjoy, hike and relax.
The Heiligengeist Gorge is one of the most beautiful destinations in Styria. In 2015 it was voted the regions' winner in the ORF TV show “9 Places – 9 Treasures”.
Length: 3 kilometres
Natural forest path along the Heiligengeist creek, moss-covered stones, damp ground, secured with ropes in some places.
Sturdy shoes, sure-footedness, good fitness.
Spitzmühle an der Heiligengeistklamm, Großwalz 21, 8463 Großwalz
There are truly enough treasures to discover in the Heiligengeistklamm: from different kinds of plants and rare ferns to mountain golden nettles, silver leaves and meadow chervils to fire salamanders and the large spring damsel (the largest species of dragonfly in Europe). The cool forest is an ideal habitat for many plants and animals. These encounters with nature create a beautiful hiking experience for young and old.
Especially in the afternoons, when the temperatures are at their highest, it is pleasantly cool in the gorge. To enjoy your hike to the fullest, we recommend sturdy shoes and sure-footedness. Due to the damp and cool climate, the path is very slippery, especially in the shade. Since the climb is not as steep as the one in the Altenbachklamm, the excursion is also suitable for children. Along the way, you will find information boards, telling of the early millwork that was located there.
You can hike the Heiligengeistklamm as part of a 9 kilometre long circuit. It starts at the Schloßberg municipal office, south of Leutschach, where the entrance to the gorge is located. Once you reach the top of the border ridge, the path finally continues along a road to Slovenia, to the church “Sveti Duh na Ostrem vrhu” From there, you will have a fantastic view of the South Styrian and Slovenian hills. By the way, a backpack is not absolutely necessary: along the way there are always Buschenschanken that serve South Styrian delicacies. The crystal clear water in the gorge also tastes wonderfully refreshing.
What about a hike on Austria's most southern alp, the Remschnigg Alm? This easy hike does not only offer fantastic views of the Graz basin and the slovenian hill and mountain landscape but also reveals the beauty of the local flora.

Hiking through South Styria, along the Slovenian border - with a view of Styria and Slovenia - that's hiking on the Remschnigg Alm! Beautiful panoramas, idyllic pastures and hilly landscapes included. A varied flora, lush forests and a lot of quiet resting spots await you.
Advanced hikers start the hike in Arnfels – at the Pößnitzbach bridge – and from there follow the hiking trail (R2). Through the town of Arnfels and along vineyards and forests, it leads steadily uphill to the Slovenian-Austrian border ridge. From here it's a leisurely walk along the mountain ridge to the Remschnigg cabin.
If you want to save yourself the climb from Arnfels, you can also start the hike at Remschnigg 53 and take an easy half-hour walk to the Remschnigg Alm cabin.
The descent to Arnfels is the same way you came or via the organic winery Sternat Lenz.
Long version: around 16 km, short version: around 5-10 km
Alternating roads, vineyards, meadows and forest areas. The path is sometimes difficult for bicycles and strollers to pass.
